adhamaṃ procyamānaṃ tu sevādānaṃ ca niṣphalam /
asamarthe na dātavyaṃ kanyādānaṃ tathaiva ca //

one [given through] demand is called base, and a gift given under servitude is fruitless.
Likewise, the gift of a maiden must not be given to one who is incapable.
