Afflicted by the burning of the poison and by the death of her husband, / she wailed like an osprey, O Vyāsa.
All the seers, headed by Vasiṣṭha, assembled for Bāhu; / having properly arranged the pyre, they approved the funeral rites.
As she, Śaivyā, entered that fire, being pregnant, / she was stopped by the seers and by the high-souled Aurva, O Vyāsa.
On that day at dusk, O Vyāsa, dispelling her grief, / that fetus emerged together with the poison (gara), radiant as fire.
The seer then gave him the name Sagara ('with poison'); / and, filled with compassion, performed all his life-cycle rites.
