4.10.33

purā kaśyapadāyādo hiraṇyakaśipurnṛpaḥ |
yadā tadā suraiḥ sārdhaṃ kṛtaṃ saṅkhyaṃ parasparam ||

Vyâsa said:-- Hear, O king! the cause of the curse; I will narrate to you. In days of yore, the king Hiranyakasipu, the son of Kasyapa often quarrelled with the Devas; owing to this incessant warfare, the whole universe was much alarmed and perplexed.
