ahorātrāṇi tāvanti māsapakṣadvayātmakaḥ
taiḥ ṣaḍbhir ayanaṃ māsair dve 'yane dakṣiṇottare //
That many days-and-nights form a month, composed of two fortnights;
with six such months there is an ayana; the two ayanas are the southern and the northern.
