atīte tu purā kalpe yatheyaṃ vartate 'nagha /
asyāntyasya ca kalpasya vyavasthāṃ kathaya prabho /
evamuktaḥ sabhāmadhye mārkaṇḍo vākyamabravīt //

Tell, O lord, how she existed formerly in the past kalpa, O sinless one, / and the established state of this final kalpa. / Addressed thus in the midst of the assembly, Mārkaṇḍa spoke these words:
