īśvara uvāca:
triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāto mārkaṇḍeyo munīśvaraḥ /
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ sa tapastepe sudāruṇam //
Īśvara said: / Renowned in the three worlds is Mārkaṇḍeya, lord of sages; / he performed very severe asceticism for a divine thousand years.
