viśeṣārghyagato'yaṃ kṣīrādidravyavikalpaḥ . ayamihopadeśādhvā -
brahmaṇaḥ kṣīrameva suśṛtaṃ sampādya tenāmṛtīkṛtena viśeṣārghyaṃ
pūrayitvārcayet . tadalābhe tvājyena tadalābhe madhunā tasyāpyalābhe āsavena
tasyāpyalābhe gandhodakena . kṣatriyastvājyena tadalābhe kṣīreṇa tadalābhe
madhunā tasyāpyalābhe āsavena tasyāpyalābhe sugandhodakena . vaiśyastu
madhunā tadalābhe ghṛtena tadalābhe kṣīreṇa tasyāpyalābhe āsavena sarvālābhe
gandhodakena . śūdrastvāsavena tadalābhe madhunā tadalābhe tvājyena tadalābhe
kṣīreṇeti . sarvālābhe sugandhodakenārghyāpādanamasyāpi samānamiti .

this is the option regarding the substances such as milk used in the special arghya. This is the path of instruction here: A brāhmaṇa, obtaining only well-boiled milk and having turned it into nectar, filling the special arghya with it, should perform worship. If that is unavailable, with clarified butter; if that is unavailable, with honey; if even that is unavailable, with liquor; if even that is unavailable, with scented water. A kṣatriya, on the other hand, [should worship] with clarified butter; if that is unavailable, with milk; if that is unavailable, with honey; if even that is unavailable, with liquor; if even that is unavailable, with scented water. A vaiśya, however, with honey; if that is unavailable, with ghee; if that is unavailable, with milk; if even that is unavailable, with liquor; if all are unavailable, with scented water. A śūdra, however, with liquor; if that is unavailable, with honey; if that is unavailable, with clarified butter; if that is unavailable, with milk. If all are unavailable, the preparation of the arghya with scented water is likewise the same for him.
