In the fields of lotuses glowing like kindled fire, / to feed on the teeming small fish leaping like popped grain / on the fragrant green leaves, softly, softly / an old kingfisher that has lost its wings sits waiting / by the ford in the town of our lord. His wife, they say, / sulks with her husband because of us. Though we / did no such thing, we are not free from blame. / Let us go there, shaking our tight bangles to tinkle, / and walk around for a little while, my friend! / May her belly be beaten like the eye of the taṇṇumai drum / beaten by the bard receiving male elephants as food / whenever the victorious Ceḻiyaṉ, with his army of gleaming swords, / slaughters in fierce battle of flawless honor!
