In the wide forest shimmering with heat, red like fire,
where the sun of shining radiance ascends the sky,
the leafless silk-cotton trees in budless bloom
appear splendid, like tall banners of lovely flame
lifted and gathered in abundance by a bustling troupe;
in that wilderness bereft of yield, where pools have turned to dust,
had he crossed along with me,
then on the swelling sands of the jungle river, spread like an unstitched garment,
on the dune beneath drooping branches dense with clusters of flowers,
he too would surely have gained
a close embrace that feels like entering each other's body!
And these faultless eyes, which now continuously weep
without ceasing, as though filling dry tanks
like matched blossoms overflowing with water,
would also have found sleep!
