இருதலைப் புள்ளின் ஓர் உயிரம்மே;
My mother loves her more fiercely than her own eyes;
my father cannot bear her feet touching the ground, and cries,
'Why, simple young daughter, do you walk until your tiny feet redden?'
And we two, in unbroken, constant friendship never parting,
are like a single life in a two-headed bird;
O lord of the good mountain land, where spotted-faced bull elephants,
mistaking for a tiger the sight dripping with honey
of fallen kino flowers burying the huts planted by the hillmen
who came to gather the ripe fruit from jackfruit trees of heavy yield
with large branches where flying squirrels play and mimic the parrot-calls
as the guardians of millet fields shout unceasingly,
flee in fright, crushing the bamboos on the cloud-capped slopes!
If you come [by night],
this gentle girl surely will not live.
