While our shining bangles slip and we languish every day,
suffering confounding sorrow, left behind here—
even if he were to receive for a single day, for a single daylight time,
the treasure like that which was abandoned for the earth to consume on that day,
when, heaped to the brim of one āmpal measure,
golden statues and diamonds were offered as glorious fine jewels
in humble tribute by his enemies upon the courtyard of the fine city of Māntai
belonging to Cēralātaṉ of victorious drums,
who drove [his foes] into the sea, cut down their kaṭampu tree, and carved his bent bow
upon the Himālayas to the wonder of the ancients—
he would not linger on the following day—may you live, my friend!—
in that land gone to by our blameless lover,
though it be in a region of a different tongue,
where unlettered Maḻavar holding their bows
watch for travellers at frightening crossroads,
their curled, curved tufts splendidly adorned with
the pure, soft clusters of the red-stemmed, black-trunked bur-flower tree.
