The village assembly ground is quieted; homes are asleep.
Tonight, arriving with the cruelty of those who have killed,
as the dead of night approaches, lust increases,
surging beyond an ocean and overflowing its shores.
Why is it—may you live, my friend!—that, though I am bewildered
and in such a state, my good heart, taking matters into its own hands
without consulting either me or you,
has gone tonight to support his faltering steps,
watching the places where he treads in the dark,
upon the small path over the rocks, resembling an elephant's rope-bound back,
where the lord of the wilderness comes, insect-swarmed blue water lilies
from small hill pools adorning his head,
along the narrow, difficult mountain slope darkened by thickets,
where rain poured from the sky and water flows down in a trail of deep, dangerous clefts?
