"வருதும்" என்ற நாளும் பொய்த்தன;
அரியேர் உண்கண் நீரும் நில்லா;
"The day he promised, 'We will return,' has proven false;
water will not cease from eyes lined with kohl, beautiful with red streaks;
he does not even think of hair that has lost the beauty of being adorned
with a garland of sharp-tipped, white buds blossoming from green jasmine vines
born to the cool rainy season;
let his merciful grace turn away if it turns—in that place
he does not fear unrighteousness! O lady of choice jewels! Our man!"
Even if she utters such few words and shows great sulking,
she will rejoice—long may you live, my heart!—
just like one who has won our distress-clearing embrace,
so that his fragrant garland, laden with dew, is crushed,
on the day she hears her kinsmen hasten to tell
of the wealth won by slaying in war,
where in the military camp where musth elephants wander—
roaring back in defiance even when thunder rises in the sky—
he crushed to ruin the pointed tips of sharp swords in the hands of warriors
who rose up coveting the land,
while blood dripping on the hoof-prints of horses
gleamed here and there like stars in the sky.
