‘Those who are poor are unable to support
those who love them and live with them, or to rejoice
in joyous union with dear kin whom they cherish!’
Thinking thus of acquiring abundant wealth, your grace turned away—
may you live long, my friend!—
He traversed the forest where, in the shadow of dried bushes heaped as graves,
where dried pods on the branched, short-legged siris tree
forked at its base like the spotted, lined head of a stag,
rattled softly like the pebble-drum of a dancing girl
whenever the violent gusts spread out and blew;
and clinging to the prickly trunk of the cactus, the gecko,
its mouth like a soothsayer’s, foretells the outcome to wayfarers
in a clear voice like the tolling of a small red-tongued bell!
