கழியுங், கானலுங் காண்தொறும் பலபுலந்து;
Looking at her plaited hair loosening its waves, the gold-like pallor
sprouting on her chest, and her breasts swelling up
to burst her bodice, showing their nipples, [mother] said many times:
‘You have grown up so much!’
Embracing her so that her broad arms met, thinking for a long time,
mother placed her under strict confinement.
In the grand port where curved conchs feed and sword-nosed sharks swiftly roam,
every time she looks upon the backwaters and the littoral woods,
where the dark flower resembling an eye on the dense blue water lily,
the bud of the moist cerunti opens its mouth,
the sapphire petals close at dusk, and in the morning
they open coolly along with the honey-scented blue lotus,
she reproaches many things, distressed: ‘Will he not come?’—
O hero with a garlanded chest, on the day you depart!
