I ache with grief; my mind deserves to ache.
Even when she moved about chasing the ball,
joined with her playmates of sweet speech,
she would tire and grow deeply distressed—so pitiable was she!
Now, embracing the chest of that hard-hearted man,
trusting his entrapping sweet words, not thinking
of the great sorrow she leaves to us, she goes swiftly into the wasteland tract
blocked by the dark, great mountain where, in the fierce-wooded summer
drained by the scorching rays, when the violent wind strikes the rustling bamboo joints,
sharp fires leap up, scattering sparks,
over the greenless peaks of that yieldless, difficult pathway—
not fit for her delicate feet! Will she be able to endure it,
she of gentle nature?
On the high summit of the lofty mountain range at night,
appearing like the sky adorned with stars,
the toddy-fragrant new flowers of the kōṅku in distinctive clusters,
swarming with buzzing bees, loosened by the wind and fallen,
shine like firebrands let slip from the hand!
