Driving away the birds that swoop on the fatty fish drying, brought by my father / from the deep expanse of the ocean waters; / resting under the pleasant shade of the laurel trees upon the sand dunes; / digging into the deep holes of the red-hued crabs; / swinging on the rope-swings made of screw-pine aerial roots / tied to the high branches of the yellow-flowered kino trees beside the curved backwater; / if we grow weary of the dancing of the kuravai upon the sand brought by the east wind, / sporting with our friends in the white-headed waves; / tying a fresh skirt of jewels and lush leaves—our dwelling / in the grove filled with many flowers and coming back home gracefully / has now been brought to an end, for Mother has placed me under guard, / listening to the words of the women of this town who know only malice, / possessed by an evil spirit of gossip, O friend! / [They said], 'There is a chariot on the moonlit sands, / its fine horses chosen by the charioteer / galloping with loud clamour along the great shore, caring not whether it is day or night!'
