"The peerless great beauty of the young woman
whose gleaming white teeth are like rows of wild jasmine buds
by the young chaste-tree at the house,
with a lovely belly and broad loins,
with low, soft hair carefully braided, and broad, soft, bamboo-like arms,
will be left in loneliness if you go to a distant land!"
Even when I said this, you would not agree;
you were set on your task and grew resolute:
"Let us bring varied wealth to make our house rejoice!"
Rise now quickly, may you prosper, O my heart!
The fragrant south wind, that shakes the bur-flower tree,
making the blossoms fall from the tender blossoming fine branches
left lonely like ivory carved by a master craftsman,
scatters the curls of the warriors walking the desert pathway,
in this dry-topped settlement where the scorching sun abides,
where vultures rest on the bare-topped tooth-brush trees.
In the deep rocky cleft, as the tender, newly-delivered, lovely bitch grew hungry,
when the green-eyed red dog charged a boar,
the startled sow brushed past, causing the green clusters of dates to drop their red fruits;
and the cowherds, whose sharp pickaxes break the rocky soil of the pebbled knolls,
lacking food, have dug leaf-covered pits that yield no water—
treating them as pits dug along the neglected pathway
by heartless hunters coveting white tusks,
herds of huge bull elephants fill them up with earth
in the forest that blocks the desert pathway over great hills.
