என்னை ஆகுமோ, நெஞ்சே! நம் வயின்;

At midnight, and in the great, wretched evening, / confused by ruinous longing and unceasing pain, / as the grief of pining for us exceeds all bounds, / what will become, O heart, with us, / of that joyful, tender gaze of her who said, 'I will come / with you' through the terrifying forest— / where wayfarers passing along the road, unable to decipher / the engraved letters appearing on the weathered hero-stone / narrowed at its waist, causing dread and declaring [the hero's] name and fame, / because fierce-eyed warriors with coarse, uncomely beards / had slain him with their arrows, leave it wearily and pass on; / in the wasteland of tooth-brush trees where fearful spirits dwell, / in courtyards smelling of flesh behind fences of wild thorny plants, / where kittens of the wildcat with lines painted like drawings / have hair puffed like pūḷai blossoms / and follow their mother like stars encircling the moon; / and where the male vulture beats his dark wings / at the sound of the small drum beaten by warriors of the hamlet taking their watch?
