நாள்வலை முகந்த கோள்வல் பரதவர்
நுணங்குமணல் ஆங்கண் உணங்கப் பெய்ம்மார்,
பறிகொள் கொள்ளையர், மறுக உக்க
மீன்ஆர் குருகின் கானலம் பெருந்துறை,
எல்லை தண்பொழில் சென்றெனச் செலீஇயர்,
தேர்பூட்டு அயர ஏஎய், வார்கோல்
செறிதொடி திருத்திப் பாறுமயிர் நீவிச்,
'செல்இனி, மடந்தை! நின் தோழியொடு, மனை' எனச்
சொல்லிய அளவை, தான்பெரிது கலுழ்ந்து
தீங்குஆ யினள்இவள் ஆயின் தாங்காது,
நொதுமலர் போலப் பிரியின் கதுமெனப்
பிறிதுஒன்று ஆகலும் அஞ்சுவல்; அதனால்,
சேணின் வருநர் போலப் பேணா,
இருங்கலி யாணர்எம் சிறுகுடித் தோன்றின்,
வல்லெதிர் கொண்டு, மெல்லிதின் வினைஇத்,
துறையும் மான்றன்று பொழுதே; சுறவும்
ஓதம் மல்கலின், மறு ஆயினவே;
எல்லின்று; தோன்றல்! செல்லாதீம்' என,
எமர்குறை கூறத் தங்கி, ஏமுற,
இளையரும் புரவியும் இன்புற, நீயும்
இல்லுறை நல்விருந்து அயர்தல்
ஒல்லுதும், பெரும! நீ நல்குதல் பெறினே.
3. நித்திலக்கோவை

At the great littoral harbor where shore-birds gorge on fish
spilled in the street by fishermen skilled in the catch
who take out their haul from dawn-nets to dry on the fine sand,
as the sun has sunk into the cool grove, urging your horses
to yoke the chariot to depart, adjusting her well-turned,
tightly-fitting bangles, smoothing her disheveled hair, when you said:
‘Go home now, simple girl, with your companion!’,
merely at those words she wept profusely and fell into sorrow;
if you now leave like a stranger without comforting her,
I fear she might suddenly become something else;
therefore, appearing in our small hamlet of bustling prosperity
like one coming from afar without close familiarity,
if our people quickly welcome you, gently inquiring, and say:
‘The ford has darkened; it is evening time; because of the swelling tide,
the sharks are stirred up; the light is gone;
do not depart, lord!’—
if you stay at our kin’s request, so that comfort ensues,
your young attendants and horses rejoice, and you too
enjoy good hospitality as a guest in our home,
we will be pleased, O great lord, if we receive your grace.
