கடுந்தேர் இளையரொடு நீக்கி நின்ற
நெடுந்தகை நீர்மையை அன்றி நீயும்
தொழுதகு மெய்யை அழிவுமுந் துறுத்துப்
பன்னாள் வந்து பணிமொழி பயிற்றலின்
குவளை யுண்கண் கலுழ நின்மாட்டு
இவளும் பெரும்பே துற்றனள் ஓரும்
தாயுடை நெடுநகர்த் தமர்பா ராட்டக்
காதலின் வளர்ந்த மாதர் ஆகலின்
பெருமடம் உடையரோ சிறிதே; அதனால்
குன்றின் தோன்றும் குவவுமணற் சேர்ப்ப!
இன்றிவண் விரும்பா தீமோ! சென்றப்
பூவிரி புன்னை மீதுதோன்று பெண்ணைக்
கூஉம்கண் ணஃதே தெய்ய- ஆங்கண்
உப்பொய் உமணர் ஒழுகையொடு வந்த
இளைப்படு பேடை இரியக் குரைத்தெழுந்து
உருமிசைப் புணரி யுடைதரும்
பெருநீர் வேலிஎம் சிறுநல் ஊரே.

Dismissing your swift chariot and young attendants, you stood,
not in the dignified nature of an eminent lord; you too,
having a body worthy of worship, put away all shame,
and coming on many days, spoke humble words repeatedly;
and weeping with kohl-lined eyes dark as blue water lilies, toward you
she too has fallen into great bewilderment, consider!
Since she is an innocent girl reared with affection
by relatives who praise her in the tall mansion where mother dwells,
she possesses great naivety! Therefore,
O lord of the shore with heaped sands that appear like hills!
Do not yearn [for her] here today! Going,
beyond that laurel tree with unfolding flowers stands a palmyra palm—
it is within calling distance, indeed!
There, barking and springing up so that a weary bitch
that arrived with the salt-merchants' caravan runs away,
with the sound of thunder the waves break
around our good little village whose fence is the great water!
