Standing at the gate like suitors seeking a great female elephant,
at one side of the broad mansion with difficult, watchful guarding,
when the watchmen slept at midnight when ghosts wander,
opening the strong door resembling a painted picture,
he united with us and said, 'In this present world,
there is no one superior to you!' On many days,
with love he stroked my thick tresses;
yet leaving, as the quarters grew scorchingly hot,
caring for strangers on the path who come along,
cowherds unyoke their tender bullocks, stir sweet tamarind broth,
and serve it on teak leaves to relieve hunger's deafness—
beyond the good land of Pulli, even if he went crossing
the wasteland tract difficult to traverse, he will not delay—
he who comforted us with gracious words before he parted!
