In the wide field cleared with fire by the hillman wearing strapped sandals, / in the dampness left by the great downpour that washed away the soot, / to serve as a swing for bright-bangle-wearing women / who guard the long ears of fresh millet growing in rows, / bending branches were stripped of leaves; and by the small rocky hill, / the tall-trunked vēṅkai clustered with branch-spikes of blossoms / looks like the crest of a young peacock. He is the man of that country. / In the kāntaḷ grove on his lofty mountain slope, / in the tree-dense thicket where monkeys cannot find a way, / he bathed with us in the sweet, gem-clear water of the guarded mountain pool, / like an elephant bull embracing his cow; / and then departed for many days; and before even a few days had passed / without him, it grew ever more continuously. / What could it be, may you live, my friend!— / that has become public scandal in the mouths of many, / like the festival of garlic where the Koṅkar / dance in the streets with bells tied to their waists, / in this little hamlet where men wearing bee-swarmed garlands / make merry on sweet toddy distilled in rich fields?
