As the shining disc moves away to distant quarters / and its many rays grow dim at the hour it touches the mountain, / an old bull with trembling head calls out in a male voice, / and stays where darkness gathers beside the house-grown nocci; / in the lovely, inhabited little hamlet near the frontline border, / at one corner of the grain-bins crammed full with plentiful harvest / of black-stalked vēṅkai-land millet and red-ridged wild grain, / a green-eyed tomcat with rounded paws, / to relieve the languishing hunger of his meat-craving mate, / watches for the moment to pounce on a rooster / whose cheeks resemble sprouts, whose neck is thickly feathered, / and whose forehead has a crest like the bright palāśa flower. / Even this bleak evening is surely sweet / to those united with a faultless, sweet companion / whose soft nature seems to melt the soul / each time they embrace to touch her lovely, beautiful breasts!
