Even if he does not forget and stay there,
as farmers exulting with clamorous festive joy in the roaring sound of night
sift the pure, fine chaff gathered from the threshing floor,
veiling the quarters of the sky like a dark, cloudy sky,
turning over and winnowing the straw at the brightening dawn,
and, to banish the grogginess of their drunken work-stupor,
strip clusters of green, parrot-like fruit
from the mango tree dense with lush sprouts that raged against the breeze,
and after pouring it, sour to the taste, filled to the brim in new jars,
placed in the sun on green-frond parasols of tightly packed leaves,
and drinking like bullocks plunging into a pool,
they feast on white cooked rice, like lines drawn with a silver stylus,
mixed with horse-gram, lentils, and milk in a lovely sight,
and when their reaching hands have been stayed,
they encircle the raised, wheel-like mound of grain, spending the day
in the shade of a marutam tree, resting together with their bulls;
indeed, this is the lovely season of spring,
only for those who have companions to savor their splendid charms!
