Having swallowed the prey seized on the hook of curved iron, / the wide-mouthed, many-striped black male freshwater shark / tears through the soft water-lily pads, leaping and scattering / the numerous opening blooms of the blue water lilies, / and entangles the fine vines of curled vaḷḷai, / refusing to be pulled by the angler fisherman; / like an infuriated bull tied with ropes, overflowing with rut, / it stirs the pool at dawn, O lord of the flower-bright town! / They say you celebrated a wedding with a maiden of fragrant, thick tresses / and slender bangles, / in the wide-flowering grove of lofty, auspicious marutu trees / on the wide-sanded broad banks of the flowing Vaiyai river; / and the public gossip about it is greater even / than the roar of the victorious warriors / on the day when the Cēḻiyaṉ of flag-bearing chariots and cropped-mane horses, / making red the broad field of Ālaṅkāṉam, / captured in one single day the war-drums and white parasols, / winning renown and slaughtering in battle, / vanquishing the prowess of seven kings: the Cēral, the Cempiyaṉ, the wrathful Titiyaṉ, / Eḻiṉi wearing gold ornaments and famed for war elephants, / the lord of Erumaiyūr with strained toddy, / Peruñcōḻaṉ of sweet-scented chest dried with sandalwood paste, / and the Porunan of well-made chariots!
