'Maidens wearing round bangles have raised sandcastles; / the young men are leaving, and daylight is no more. / In the spotless shade of the broad-leaved punnai, / playing with us during the day, if you spend the night / in suffering within the well-built house thatched with salt-marsh reed, / you will bring upon me your father's harsh guarding,' you say. / And yet, if I tell you, 'Do not leave,' you cannot bear it; / and if I say, 'If you leave, I shall not live,' then, / while a garland woven thick with bees on the ñāḻal / and a cool, fresh wreath of neytal sway on your chest, / like the goddess of the sea standing on the shore at twilight, / you would remain behind in the grove, while I, / giving up my ornaments that shone like a spirit-possessed doll, / would return like a dancing girl. / I cannot bear it, truly! Let public scandal envelop this town!
