Because the summer prolonged, fallen in withered fields / small grass-grain food, carrying it in orderly lines on their tracks, / fine and numerous ants packed tightly into their holes; / warriors with taut bows who make of this unseeded food their sustenance, / entering time and again, carried away the useful cattle-herds; / in the great, ruined public square abandoned by prosperous families, / elderly men with grey hair bowed their trembling heads, / and as their mind-dividing board-game beauty was ruined / by the chewing of striped termites, turning pale, / in the terror-ripened, ancient common hall whose great goodness had perished, / staying in a cruel, lonely corner, / remembering the great charm and sweet smile of her gentle, soft grace, / though they are strangers, indeed they pass through— / those men capable of granting with renown / what is begged by those who come driven by desire!
