Do not go, lord of the agricultural tract! I surely owe you a duty— / just as, while Karikāl watched with his bustling retinue / at the front landing of bustling-eared fields of Kaḻāar, / where abundant waters pound the marutam-lofty gardens / as if an untrained elephant learned the swift floods, / sweet melody paused to mark the cool rhythm, / bright-spotted, ornate anklets rolled on his red feet, / a black belt bound around his handsome belly, / and dark gold round ornaments chimed with tinkling bells / when Atti, who loved to play in the waters, was seized and hidden / by the Kāvērī river that desired his beauty! / We will not sulk against you; / see, pallor has spread over my forehead; / where in the spring's fine-hollowed vaḷḷai, confusing the fiery creepers, / wide-leafed paddy's curving ears burst open, / and tuft-headed, curled prawns leap, / restore to me my beauty, like Marantai of the Kuṭṭuvaṉ / with lovely, flowing-maned steeds, / and then depart!
