As the proud lord of powerful elephants laments when the ferocious lion, / the splendid beast, takes his raised white tusk to feed the heron-chicks, / in that frightening place where mist is destroyed / and the revolving sun with shimmering rays spits fire, / a long, insatiable distance where shadows are scooped out and consumed, / where the bow-wrath of the Vaṭukar who have fierce dogs in huts thatched with split hide has subsided at fearful forks in the path, / a flock of male vultures with dark wings smelling of raw flesh, drenched in blood, / herald their plunder of fresh meat, rising on wings / and adorning the sky like twilight clouds— / traversing such a harsh wilderness tract, does she, pining away, / sigh deeply, her body fallen into great desolation / like the ancient fortress of non-submitting foes ruined / by the Vāṉavaṉ with his battle-skilled army that breached enemy borders, / wearing sweet-smelling garlands humming with bees? / Pitiful indeed is she, / as clear tears gather in her cool, streaked, wide eyes, / like matched, blooming pairs of blue water lilies / with rowed petals produced by deep waters, drunk by bees!
