At dawn when night fades and mist spreads across the fields,
swarms of small birds chirp on the fire-like flowering branches
of the murukku whose black buds have opened in their turn;
plows enter the fields tightly packed with tall paddy stalks,
and turn over the soil in gardens with crested fences;
the loud, clear calls of plowmen prodding chosen oxen through stubbled fields
resound over every tract;
and trees flourish, facing each other with dense clusters of blooms—
in this delightful season when the wilderness wears its beauty,
has she grieved, losing her radiant charm from the sorrow of our parting,
so that her fine shoulders, renowned for their beauty that knew no separation,
grow thin—
she of dark beauty with fine, abundant freckles
like drops of sweet pollen shed by gentle-winged bees
upon tender leaves from cool, fragrant clusters of flowers,
her dark loveliness dim with tears?
