O dark-complexioned maiden of sprout-like beauty,
with cool, abundant eyes whose red edges resemble
the lovely rain-kissed buds of the wild jasmine flourishing in heavy rains,
scarcely to be plucked!
When the land suffered severe drought and plows lay idle,
and the hot season dragged on, draining all greenness,
in the safe early dawn, when heavy rain poured down,
sweeping across and filling the wide ponds scorched by the sun—
ponds whose banks resembled hills, where no birds came to roost,
and which held no water—
all the delight rejoiced in by many folk
was poured into me,
now that the lord of the sky-touching mountain, whose high peaks
loom far away, has come!
