When the fishing hunt of the fishermen in curved boats turned out prosperous,
so that the hamlet in the small hamlet reeked of strong raw fish smell,
praising the use of their fine, small-meshed nets,
the lord of the shore distributed fat-eyed ayirai fish;
our bond of intimacy with him was earlier revealed
as women with gossiping mouths spread village whispers,
and many people there came to know of it; but now,
after the wedding has taken place, like the banyan tree with many aerial roots
where Rama of winning battles silenced [the birds] for his secret counsel
at the ancient seashore harbour of the winning-speared Pāṇḍyas,
where the roaring dark sea laments, and women adorned for festivals gather
leaf skirts alongside thick-stemmed neytal blossoming with green leaves in the dark water,
adorning the beautiful wide seashore harbour with puṉṉai streaked with gold-flowered ñāḻal,
this noisy town has fallen silent.
