சுட்டுநர்ப் பனிக்கும் சூருடை முதலைய;

At midnight with torrential rain, when the sky flashes as if tearing darkness apart
and pours down drops of water, where the big-handed male bear,
looking like an iron-forging smith, scoops out the anthill whose hollow mouths
swarm with flashes of light, glowing like sparks of hammered gold, to dig for termites;
there, the paths are impassable; the rivers harbor dreaded crocodiles
that make even those who point them out tremble with fear;
as the bamboo-submerging flood clashes with boulders and roars,
without saying, 'I fear to go alone,' on slopes laden with spirits
carrying mists and echoing with swaying bamboos, where a tiger in raging fury,
having slain a huge bull elephant to dispel the pregnancy-hunger of its mate,
drags it so it dries in the glare of the gem-light emitted by a terrifying good cobra,
a crossroads difficult to traverse, as if walking upon a sword-blade,
a narrow path crushed by rocks that terrifies any who think of it—
he who came, with a compassionate heart and a spear for his companion,
is not cruel; nor are you at fault, who brought him to me;
I alone, my friend, am the one at fault,
who brought this unending, hard distress upon you!
