பிடிக்கை அமைந்த கனல்வாய்க் கொள்ளி
விடுபொறிச் சுடரின் மின்னி அவர்
சென்ற தேஎத்து நின்றதால் மழையே.

Wearing in your oil-rich, flowing hair
an unwashed topknot bound with a braid,
while a single-strand pearl string shines between your breasts
casting rays like a wildcat staring into the dark,
wasting away with innocent grace, in painful chastity—
you do not think only of your own grief;
saying in deep pity, “What will become of her, poor girl?”,
you sorrow for my ruin, and with you,
I share the same undivided sight, not calling this the path [of virtue].
Come see what has arrived to end our affliction,
O loving friend!
Like sparks leaping from a burning torch
held firmly in the hand of a watchman on a high loft
in a fine, small field of millet, who has the strength of a tiger
watching for the sleeping hour of an elephant in the tangled creepers—
the rainclouds stand flashing with lightning
in the land where he has gone.
