Delighting in the victory that crowned his task,
while his battle-hardened youths praise the strength of his feet,
in the fresh dawn after cold showers fell,
as bright-red velvet mites like drops of blood
make fine lines in rows on the edges of the broad path,
and delicate, freshly opened flowers of the green-vined mullai
strew in numbers across the white, salty, coarse sand,
in the cool-fragrant woodland where bees unclose the buds—
whenever he sees the bewildered gaze of the lovely, gentle doe
of the black-horned buck, he will think of you and urge:
‘Charioteer of the sturdy chariot! Drive on!’,
and he will return this very day. Let tears cease!”
I would indeed be comforted by your strength,
as you utter many good words of sweet reassurance—
if only my heart were not pained by the shrill, small pipe
blown with strong mouths by untaught cowherds with crooked staves,
as it blends with the evening of sorrow at day’s end!
