‘Even if her fine forehead pales, it is best to traverse
the hard-to-approach forest to achieve wealth’—
if you have thought thus, falling behind grace,
you have thought a very evil thought, long may you live, my heart!
If you go along the junction of stony paths
where red-eared vultures perch terrifyingly,
dragging out the intestines of bold warriors
fallen in glorious battle with life departed,
just like the men of the assembly who examine the seal
and break it to take out the palm-leaf from the cord-bound jar,
in the ancient, renowned wasteland where the thundering clouds have departed
and people have abandoned their ancestral homes everywhere—
then in the deep-dark evening, when the daylight wind shakes
the spotted shade of the rough-trunked fig tree in the small village,
her eyes welling with tears will cause painful grief,
like the sharp-bladed spear raised in fierce battle against unyielding kings
by the warrior of the Vāṉavaṉ, with a broad hand holding a curved bow,
Piṭṭaṉ of generous delight and ceaseless liquor!
