‘Though my fine forehead turns yellow with pallor, my broad shoulders grow thin, / and with sorrow that prevents eating, life wanes and languishes, / even as we are thus, he who abandoned us here / is not a man of virtue’—do not sink in grief, complaining of many things, / may you live, my friend!—‘On the mountain slopes / of the long Vēṅkaṭam mountain of Tiraiyan of the victorious spear, / where the green-eyed elephant breaks tender bamboo sprouts / and feeds them to relieve the hunger of its calf / born to a gentle cow elephant of soft gait, exhausted by childbirth; / on the fragrant branch of the fresh-budding kuruntu tree, / where the spotted, striped peacock has bathed in the sweet flowers / of the young, tender kino tree that bloomed on an auspicious day, / it calls to its mate, summoning its partner in the cool, rain-bringing rainy season / when he comforted us saying: “We shall return”— / behold, that is the season! The rain has poured down.’
