Has he gone alone along the path where passage is hard,
where an owl-clawed bear digs deep-scarred ant-hills,
thick with snakes, in the bamboo-filled copse,
where the acuṇam listens from the dark mountain cleft-cave,
mistaking for a lute the buzzing of a black-winged swarm
upon the lovely rut cascading over the cheeks
of a big-trunked elephant that killed a huge tiger on the hill,
following the tall burning torch
lit by the strong-handed hillman upon his watchtower,
as he watched the manner of the boar's coming,
creeping close, hearkening to the sound of the cleft-mouthed lizard nearby,
to eat the tall, curved, large ears of robust red millet
thriving on the old raised ground—
that good man who arrived and wiped away our trembling grief?
