The iruppai buds, resembling the arrow-tips
packed tightly into the quivers of bowmen,
with sharp, short steel points wrought by smiths,
among the red foliage shaped like beaten copper;
its hollow tubes, sweet as butter, with soft mouths
perforated as if by an awl, loosening and shedding,
scatter in the wind like hailstones from the sky
upon the path of coral-red earth,
looking like fat spread over blood;
near the wilderness path in a small settlement of lovely homes,
where women with curved, fine tresses lift
the pestles adorned with metal bands, their rhythmic chanting sound
echoing along with the horned owl on the high, great mountain—
leaving those hills behind, driving our strength,
even when the sun sets, without saying 'The town is far away',
driving the swift-galloping steeds on an unpausing journey:
swifter than us, reaching speedily and standing
in a corner of that many-storied, splendid mansion,
praying each time the lizard on the wall clicks,
reaching her as she stands in the evening when calves return home,
walking softly with cupped hands, approaching and covering her eyes,
touching her braided hair like an elephant's trunk,
and caressing her arm decked with bangles—
did it embrace her,
my heart, which went ahead longing to gain the soft shoulders
of the young maiden of bright forehead and sweet, lovely words,
whose chastity is blended with modesty?
