Even the midnight hour when the serpent loses its strength
because the dangling skin and sharp, curved claws of the large-pawed male bear,
who feeds on termite comb settling on the damp back of the winged-ant mound, strike it,
would not be difficult, O friend! If only one could meet a traveler who would ask:
“You who, so as not to lose your way amid the countless crags
in the land of him where, in sky-touching chasms, echoes
the uproar of a large tree twisted by a cow-elephant
to relieve the distress of her fierce bull elephant fallen in a deep miry hollow,
lofty with vaḻai and plantain trees, upon a mountain slope resounding with bamboos
where the wide-jawed tiger, having slain a huge boar, drags it
so that the slopes dense with jackfruit reek of flesh,
stepped aside slightly as the lightning flashed,
and slowly gathering your sapphire-like five-part hair drenched with drops
to cover the small of your back, and wringing out the tresses,
blocked his path—do you also know this wilderness?”
