யான்உயிர் வாழ்தல் அதனினும் அரிதே!
On the slope of the snow-clad mountain high and fruitful,
with unwavering devotion he rejoiced in us,
and though that sweet affection has turned painful,
mother does not know that this distress, this hateful affliction,
would be soothed by the chest of the lord of the hills where spirits dwell.
Seeing that the bright, well-crafted bangles tightly fitted were slipping down,
with helpless heart she asked;
and false, cunning old women stirred divination shells, sat down,
and said, "This is a torment from Murukaṉ."
Believing that, in our fine house adorned with work like a painting,
she prayed: "May the exquisite beauty praised by many,
like a carved puppet, bloom better than before for my daughter!"
As sweet musical instruments joined in sounding, the ground was prepared,
and under the broad, vast pavilion set for ritual dance,
wearing white palm-leaf strips along with kaṭampu blossoms,
setting a delicate, sweet, rhythmic beat, never resting his hand,
praising the great name of the Lord,
the Velan must dance, swaying in the wide arena
like a doll made by a master craftsman with hidden strings.
What will happen then, my friend?
Even after the dance is done, to the anguish of the confused, deluded woman,
if my withered form does not bloom brighter than before,
will this secret fail to become public scandal? It will be hard to avoid!
Moreover, if the fragrant Lord Neṭuvēḷ,
taking pity on the distress caused by the diviners, were to bestow his grace,
and the lord of the forest country should hear:
"The affliction of the maiden of tight bangles has another cause,"
my remaining alive would be harder still!
