With "The brahmans harness, they harness the mind," he offers into the Āhavanīya fire. Prajāpati indeed extended the sacrifice through the mind; then through speech, then through action. Having extended the sacrifice through the mind alone, the sacrificer then performs it through speech, then through action. 1 With "At the impulse of the god Savitṛ," he takes the spades. Impelled by Savitṛ alone, he takes them with the deities. He takes four. Four indeed are the quarters; from the quarters the Pravargya is collected; from the quarters indeed he collects the Pravargya. They are made of wood; by means of trees indeed the Pravargya is collected; by means of trees indeed he collects the Pravargya. 2 With "Stand up, O Brahmaṇaspati," he stands up. Brahmaṇaspati is indeed Bṛhaspati; having become Bṛhaspati himself, he stands up. 3 With "May the bounteous Maruts come forward," [he goes]. The bounteous Maruts are indeed connected with the wilderness; in the wilderness the Pravargya is collected; in the wilderness he makes it belonging to the wilderness. 4 With "May Brahmaṇaspati go forth," he firmly steps forward. Brahmaṇaspati is indeed Bṛhaspati; having become Bṛhaspati himself, he firmly steps forward. 5 With "May the divine Sūnṛtā come," [he speaks]. The divine Sūnṛtā is indeed speech; through speech the Pravargya is collected; through speech alone he collects the Pravargya. 6 With "Unto the valiant hero, favorable to men, providing fivefold wealth," [he goes]. The hero favorable to men and providing fivefold wealth is indeed the sacrifice; he collects the sacrifice for the gods alone. 7 With "O divine Heaven and Earth, may you consent for me at the sacrificial ground," [he addresses them]. These two indeed were afraid of the Mahāvīra while it was being collected, thinking: "It will burn us up with its fiery energy." Bṛhaspati said to them: "It is a share for you two." Then they consented to it. 8 With "May I today prosper the head of Makha of the cosmic order," he collects [the earth]. He collects the head of the sacrifice alone. He brings [earth] three times, for the gods are threefold true. He surrounds [the pit] all around with the spades, to ward off the demons. When Prajāpati was desirous of creating offspring, his sacrificial fiery energy departed from him. It entered into this [earth].
