He who knows thus becomes prosperous. 'O Arkāsadhasthau, make me endowed with sight among these people; may I be endowed with sight among these people.' Mitra and Varuṇa are indeed the two Arkāsadhasthas among the gods. They rule over sight. They grant sight to him. He who knows thus becomes endowed with sight. 'O father and mother, make me endowed with hearing among these people; may I be endowed with hearing among these people.' Heaven and Earth are indeed the father and mother among the gods. They rule over hearing. They grant hearing to him. He who knows thus becomes endowed with hearing. 'O Yama and Aṅgiras, make me long-lived among these people; may I be long-lived among these people.' Yama and Varuṇa are indeed the Yama and Aṅgiras among the gods. They rule over lifespan. They grant lifespan to him. He who knows thus becomes long-lived. With 'May we partake of thee, Gharma, full of honey, full of nourishment; homage be to thee; do not injure me', [he prays] for non-injury to himself. With 'Thou art light, the sap of trees', he fills it first with honey. Honey is indeed this sap of the flowers and fruits of trees. With that alone he completes it. Then they say, 'Honey is life; if one were to place life into the fire, he would be liable to die.' When he says, 'Place life in me', he places life into himself; he becomes long-lived. With 'Thou art light-radiant, the sap of waters and plants', he [fills] it second with ghee; this is indeed its dear abode; with that he completes it. When he says, 'Place sight in me', he places sight into himself; he becomes endowed with sight. With […] the third with curd; this is indeed its dear abode; with that he completes it. When he says, 'Place nourishment in me', he places nourishment into himself; he becomes full of nourishment. With 'And fierce and shaking', the group [of mantras] to be recited in the forest is for pacification. With 'O Agni, lord of vows! O Vāyu, lord of vows! O Sūrya, lord of vows!', these indeed are the lords of vows among the gods.
