In the middle he places a fan; he thereby makes the navel. Above he places the stool; he thereby makes the chest. He covers it with a black antelope skin. The black antelope skin is the form of the sacred word; he covers it with the sacred word itself. He covers it with muñja grass. Muñja grass is nourishment; he covers it with nourishment itself. He mixes it with curd for the sake of fiery energy, [so that] Rudra does not harm him. He acts like a goose. That sun yonder is the goose. [...] sprinkling around [...] Walking around while sprinkling, [he recites]: ‘You are pleasing, bestowing vigor.’ Thereby he makes its vigor flourish. ‘A child, nourishing the people.’ Thereby he explains its form and greatness. If birds should settle near the Gharma, one should know that these creatures will attend upon him. Therefore he should protect it from birds. With two [verses], ‘Like blood-mouthed cattle dispersing...’, he should offer oblations. Yama is death; with his own share he appeases him. ‘Bring well-being and bring around!’ is the blessing he prays for. With ‘May the waters be friendly to us’, they pour out water; he makes them friendly. With ‘May they be unfriendly to him’, in whichever direction his enemy may be, in that direction he should pour it out; he makes them unfriendly to him. ‘This is your food, O Gharma, this your nourishment.’ Ghee, curd, and honey are his food; he prospers him with that. ‘Thereby increase!’—with proper food he prospers him. ‘And may we increase and swell!’ is the blessing he prays for. ‘You are named Delight.’ That is Rudra’s auspicious name. [...] Thus he prays for this blessing for himself. ‘The drop, the capable falcon, righteous, golden-winged... Follow me to the soma-drinking! You are fuel; may we thrive!’ Thus they buy off Rudra; they do not consign him to grief. ‘You are kindling; may we kindle!’ is the blessing he prays for. ‘Put fiery energy in me again!’—he places fiery energy in himself. With ‘Up this Jātavedas...’, he offers ten oblations.
