[…] 238 He should make an offering with two [verses]: 'Out of fear of whom thou sittest down, from that make fearlessness for us. Fearlessness for our cattle! Homage to Rudra the bountiful!' Rudra is Agni. He appeases him with his own share. He attains a full lifespan. That is the expiation in that case. Death threatens the offspring of him whose Mahāvīra, when being set [on the fire], birds or predators run towards. 239 He should make an offering with two [verses], 'Blood-mouthed, as it were, among the cows…' Yama is Death. He appeases him with his own share […] for the harmlessness of oneself. […] when about to proceed with the Pravargya […] of the consecrated […] collects the Pravargya [implements]. He collects [them] on an antelope skin. Agni indeed […] collects; with gravel for stability; with pieces of broken pots […] There is a stool of udumbara wood. Udumbara is nourishment; by nourishment he sustains it. It has webbing of muñja grass. Muñja grass is nourishment; by nourishment he sustains it. It has legs a span long; for so long are these 239-1 vital breaths […] sustains it. He spreads a black antelope skin [upon it]. He covers [it] with a black antelope skin. The black antelope skin is this form of sacred lore (brahman). With sacred lore he sustains it. To the northeast of the Gārhapatya fire he makes an earthen mound; he makes the other two earthen mounds to the north. This world is the Gārhapatya fire; that [world] is the Āhavanīya fire; what is offered in the Gārhapatya fire he causes to go to the heavenly world. […] having closed the doors from outside, he proceeds with the Pravargya […] and for the separation of the worse and the better […] That sun, Rudra, is the Mahāvīra […] Thus ends the Gharmajaṭhara Brāhmaṇa. Thus ends the Śukriya Brāhmaṇa. 240
