With nourishment, with cattle he prospers him. If he should practice sorcery, [he should say,] 'Here I deprive so-and-so, son of so-and-so, the son of such-and-such mother, of nourishment, of cattle.' Cattle are the Jagatī; with nourishment, with cattle he deprives him. 'Here I prosper myself with fiery energy, with priestly splendor, with might, with valor, with offspring, with cattle, with proper food.' The self is in priestly splendor; he thus prospers his own self with fiery energy, with priestly splendor, with might, with valor, with offspring, with cattle, with proper food. 'For the upright one thee, for the straight one thee, for good dwelling thee'—according to the yajus he sets down each subsequent [pot]; he thus steps down upon these worlds. 'I gaze upon thee with the eye of the Sun,' he looks [at it]. If he were to look at this with the eye of humans, it would burn their sight and the creatures would be born blind; with the eye of the Sun he gazes upon it. 'May speech sprinkle thee': he sprinkles it with milk. Speech indeed is Gāyatrī; with speech he sprinkles it. 'May nourishment sprinkle thee': nourishment is food; with proper food he sprinkles it. 'May milk sprinkle thee': cattle are milk; with cattle he sprinkles it. 'May sap sprinkle thee,' 'May the oblation sprinkle thee,' 'May Soma sprinkle thee,' 'May the sacrifice sprinkle thee,' 'May the brahman sprinkle thee,' 'May Prajāpati sprinkle thee'—according to the yajus. 'O brahman, we shall proceed with the Pravargya,' the adhvaryu addresses the brahman priest. For at that moment the sacrifice rests in the brahman priest; therefore he addresses him. 'Yoked with yajus,' the brahman priest [answers]. A chariot of yajus indeed is this sacrifice; the adhvaryu yokes it in the sacrificial rite. That is the adhvaryu-ship of the adhvaryu. The adhvaryu conducts it; the adhvaryu alone is the leader of all this. The adhvaryu gives commands to the other priests; saying 'Do this, do that,' he thus directs them. 'Let them be fashioned with sāmans': the sāmans are its wheels on both sides. 'Prepared with all thoughts': with all thoughts indeed the sacrifice is prepared.
