‘They will bring one of three draughts:
either Soma, or sour milk, or water.
If it is Soma, that is the draught of the brahmins;
with that draught you will delight the brahmins.
A person like a brahmin will be born in your offspring—
a taker [of gifts], a drinker [of Soma], a seeker of food, one who may be removed at will.
When evil befalls a kṣatriya,
a person like a brahmin is born in his offspring;
and the second or the third [generation] from him is liable to pass into the brahmin state,
desiring to live as a wretched brahmin.
Now if it is sour milk, that is the draught of the vaiśyas;
with that draught you will delight the vaiśyas.
A person like a vaiśya will be born in your offspring—
a payer of tribute to another, food for another, one who may be oppressed at will.
When evil befalls a kṣatriya,
a person like a vaiśya is born in his offspring;
and the second or the third [generation] from him is liable to pass into the vaiśya state,
desiring to live by the vaiśya state.
Now if it is water, that is the draught of the śūdras;
with that draught you will delight the śūdras.
A person like a śūdra will be born in your offspring—
the servant of another, to be expelled at will, to be slain at will.
When evil befalls a kṣatriya,
a person like a śūdra is born in his offspring;
and the second or the third [generation] from him is liable to pass into the śūdra state,
desiring to live by the śūdra state.’
