sa prācānyena padā prābhraṃśata pratīcānyena
yena prācā prābhraṃśata sā kakubabhavat
tasmātkakubhaḥ pūrvārdhe'kṣarāṇi bhūyiṣṭhāni

tasmāduṣṇiho jaghanārdhe'kṣarāṇi bhūyiṣṭhāni
te vā ete chandasī dhenuścaivānaḍvāṃśca
tasmātpaśavaḥ pūrvārdhena ca jaghanārdhena ca bhūyiṣṭhaṃ bhuñjanti
vahanti pūrvārdhena duhre ca jaghanārdhena pra ca janayanti
ubhayaṃ dhenupayasaṃ cānaḍutpayasaṃ cāvarunddhe ya evaṃ veda
He slipped forward with one foot, backward with the other. That with which he slipped forward became the Kakubh; therefore the Kakubh has most syllables in its first half. And that with which he slipped backward became the Uṣṇih; therefore the Uṣṇih has most syllables in its latter half. These two meters are the milk cow and the draft ox. Therefore cattle enjoy most with the front half and the rear half: they pull with the front half, they give milk and procreate with the rear half. He obtains both the milk of the cow and the milk of the ox, who knows thus.
