1.159

He slipped forward with one foot, backward with the other. That with which he slipped forward became the Kakubh; therefore the Kakubh has most syllables in its first half. And that with which he slipped backward became the Uṣṇih; therefore the Uṣṇih has most syllables in its latter half. These two meters are the milk cow and the draft ox. Therefore cattle enjoy most with the front half and the rear half: they pull with the front half, they give milk and procreate with the rear half. He obtains both the milk of the cow and the milk of the ox, who knows thus.

1.159.p1

On these [verses is] the Sabha [sāman], for the suitability of the sacrifice itself.

1.159.p2

Whatever of the sacrifice is ill-praised, ill-recited, defective, that is for its suitability.

1.159.p3

'May it be suitable, fearless,' saying thus, indeed, they praise with it.

1.159.p4

Sābha is its name, indeed.

1.159.p5

By the Sabha the gods [took away] the splendor, strength, faculty, vital power, cattle, and food of the asuras; by the Sabha,

1.159.p6

they made themselves superior, suitable.

1.159.p7

That is the essence of the Sabha.

1.159.p8

By the Sabha [one takes away] the splendor, strength, faculty, vital power, cattle, and food of one's rival enemy; by the Sabha,

1.159.p9

he makes himself superior, suitable, who knows thus.

1.159.p10

Prajāpati created cattle.

1.159.p11

Having been created, they went away from him.

1.159.p12

He desired, 'May the cattle not go away from me; may they turn toward me.'

1.159.p13

He saw this sāman.

1.159.p14

With it he praised.

1.159.p15

Then the cattle turned toward him; then they became non-departing from him.

1.159.p16

He said, 'I have become rich in cattle, suitable.'

1.159.p17

That, indeed, is the essence of the Sabha.

1.159.p18

He becomes rich in cattle, fearless, who knows thus.

1.159.p19

And it is on the Kakubh [meter] and having a tone-cadence.

1.159.p20

The tone is breath; the Kakubh is the human meter.

1.159.p21

Breath is primacy; man is primacy.

1.159.p22

By primacy they join primacy; by primacy they stand firm in primacy.

1.159.p23

And also, they thereby supply the sacrificer with breath.

1.159.p24

It succeeds for him who knows thus.
